NMCG ask Municipal Bodies and Industries to furnish Action Plan for the Sewage Treatment and Trade Effluent within 15 Days

National Mission on Clean Ganga (NMCG) has directed 118 Municipalities/ Urban Local Bodies in the States of UP, Uttrakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand and West-Bengal and 687 industrial units in the States of UP, Uttrakhand, Bihar and West-Bengal to furnish the action plans directly to the concerned State Program Management Group (SPMGs) in the respective State with a copy to the NMCG, for construction / rehabilitation and / or upgradation of the sewage treatment plants (STPs) , installation of requisite equipments / augmentation of the STPs by such municipalities / urban local bodies and Effluent Treatment Plants / Common Effluent Treatment Plant (ETPs / CETPs ), zero liquid discharge / real time monitoring for the discharge of trade effluents for abatement of pollution by the industries, as the case may be [The action plans are to be furnished in the specified format as available at www.nmcg.nic.in]. In the event of non-compliance of the Notice, the NMCG will be constrained to take all necessary steps and make necessary submissions before the Supreme Court of India and before the National Green Tribunal, besides taking such other legal actions as may be deemed appropriate. 

River Ganga has been facing serious threat due to discharge of increasing quantities of sewage effluents, trade effluents and other pollutants on account of rapid urbanization and industrialization. National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) has been constituted by Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Government of India vide notification no. SO 2539 (E) dated 29th September, 2014. National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has been established inter-alia to implement the work program of NGRBA in accomplishing the mandate of NGRBA, to coordinate and oversee the implementation of action plans for ensuring effective abatement of pollution and rejuvenation of the river Ganga. NMCG is consolidating and coordinating all ongoing efforts and planning in respect of river Ganga in order to achieve and maintain the prescribed environmental standards and has established State Program Management Group (SPMGs) to co-ordinate the efforts with the concerned State Governments. 

With a view to take remedial measures for preventing, controlling and abating pollution in river Ganga and in view of the orders / directions issued, from time to time, by the Supreme Court of India and National Green Tribunal, it is necessary and expedient for the identified municipalities/ urban local bodies and industries, who are discharging sewage/ trade effluent, to prepare necessary action plans with specific time bound actions.
