The Union Culture Minister Smt. Chandresh Kumari Katoch in Delhi, on March 8, 2013 announced that the Zonal Cultural Centers under her Ministry will launch a year-long campaign on ‘Cultural Barriers in Women’s Health’ in collaboration with Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA). Inaugurating a week-long celebrations on International Women’s Day to honour the unsung women who have silently worked to enrich the cultural heritage of India, Smt. Katoch lauded the multifarious contributions of women in the nation building. She said, ‘Bhumika’ – the role of women in cultural heritage, is a fitting tribute to the women. At ‘Bhumika’, women artists from all over India are demonstrating their art and craft in a series of skills including wood carving, painting, clay modeling, basketry, music and dance.
The Minister inaugurated the following four exhibitions on the occasion: an exhibition ‘Women in Culture’ mounted by Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS) that narrates the role of women in culture, through paintings and photographs, besides a few 3-D exhibits. The second exhibition is by the IGNCA – ‘Stree : archetypes / alterbodies ’ paintings by Ms. Sajitha Shankar. Her exhibition has three components: (1) A series of paintings on women seers, (2) Alter Bodies – Expressions of body representation of women and (3) Femininity – installations. The third exhibition ‘Cultural Barriers in Women’s Health’ is on women’s health issues. The fourth is an exhibition of cartoons by Mr. Irfan Khan on the theme ‘Save the Girl Child.’
The Minister also went around the colourful display of tribal huts and artists’ stall as the performers demonstrated their skills and crafts. She also honoured 12 veteran women artists from different realms of art and culture for contributions in their respective fields. The artists belong to the field of indigenous art forms, painting, dance and music. The week-long festivities from March 8 to 14 to celebrate the role of women in cultural heritage are being hosted by the IGNCA in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, Bhopal.
