Maneka Sanjay Gandhi Launches Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana in Dehradun Along with its Nation-Wide Launch

With its Insurance Policy The Scheme will be Big Boon for Disaster Prone Areas Like Uttarakhand says The Minister

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smt Maneka Sanjay Gandhi launched the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana in Dehradun, Uttarakhand today along with its nation-wide launch by the Prime Minister. The Minister handed over passbooks of newly opened accounts to first ten new customers at a function organized for the purpose . 1400 hundred camps were organized in Uttarakhand today to open new bank accounts for people of the state.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that Uttarakhand is a disaster prone state and the insurance policy accompanying each account will be a big boon for the people of the state. She said, “ We saved money in piggybanks as children and now the banks give us a sense of security with our saved money, of which we must make full use.”. The Minister assured the Chief Minister that she will take up the issue of internet connectivity with BSNL. She also requested the Chief Minister to direct each MLA to bring ten thousand families within the banking net.

The Uttarakhand Chief Minister Shri Harish Rawat pointed out the difficulty of providing banking facilities to the remote areas of the state including lack of internet connectivity.

Sh B. Sriram, MD, State Bank of India along with senior officers of RBI and State Government were present on the occasion.

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is a mega financial inclusion plan under which bank accounts and debit cards with inbuilt insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh will be provided to people with no access to formal banking facilities. Apart from its main launch in the national capital, functions were organised at state and district headquarters to launch the scheme.
