The Government has taken many initiatives for protecting and improving AYUSH system of medicine. For documentation of the existing knowledge available in public domain on AYUSH system, to safeguard the sovereignty of the traditional knowledge and to protect it from being misappropriated in the form of patents on non-original innovations, Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL) a collaborative project has been established between Ministry of AYUSH and CSIR, and is being implemented at CSIR. The Research Councils under Ministry of AYUSH collect and compile the data of folklore medicine and their uses. Digitization of manuscripts for the purpose of preservation, protection and transmission of the ancient knowledge is also an activity of Research Councils. The National Institutes and other centrally funded institutes also have preserved ancient manuscripts.
The Central Sector Scheme of CME under Ministry of AYUSH has provisions for training to AYUSH doctors, teachers and paramedics to upgrade their professional skills. Central Council of Indian Medicine and Central Council for Homoeopathy have notified relevant regulations pertaining to quality of education with prior approval of Ministry of AYUSH.
For the development of Quality standards of ASU &H drugs, Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy (PCIM&H) has been set up as an independent autonomous Organization under Ministry of AYUSH. Ministry of AYUSH has launched National AYUSH Mission (NAM) during 12th Plan for implementing through States/UTs. The basic objective of NAM is to promote AYUSH medical systems through cost effective AYUSH services, strengthening of educational systems, facilitate the enforcement of quality control of Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani & Homoeopathy (ASU &H) drugs and sustainable availability of ASU & H raw materials.
