Delivering the Convocation address at the 34th Convocation Ceremony of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Institute and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, today, the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi urged the graduating students to keep the poor of the nation in mind, at every step of their career. He reminded the graduating students that this Convocation Ceremony (Deekshant Samaaroh) should not mark the end of their education (should not become Shikshaant Samaaroh). He said it is an occasion when they emerge from the world of books to the real world.
The Prime Minister spoke of the global trend towards holistic healthcare. He urged the graduating students to not just treat illnesses, but to form a bond with their patients. He also presented gold medals to meritorious students. Noting the presence of children from nearby Government schools at the function, the Prime Minister said that they were the real chief guests of the occasion, and expressed hope that this occasion would serve as an inspiration for them.
Shri J P Nadda, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare who graced the occasion urged graduating doctors to keep empathy and compassion for the poor, under-privileged and vulnerable and to create an island of excellence and work tirelessly for the well being of the neediest. More than five hundred students received their Post-Graduate degree during the convocation ceremony. The Health Minister said that the PGIMER, Chandigarh has been constantly upgrading its capacities in patient care, medical education and health research. The Institution is conducting one of the most successful postgraduate programmes in the country with a capacity to train over 900 doctors every year in Post Graduate and Super Specialties.
Speaking on the occasion, the Health Minister said the Government attaches a lot to importance to tertiary care and medical education and in this regard the government has announced 10 new AIIMS like institutions in various parts of the country. Existing medical colleges are being upgraded by setting up of super specialty blocks in 70 medical colleges in the entire country. We are expanding the network of our medical colleges in a big way by upgrading 58 district hospitals to medical colleges. 20 State cancer institutes and 50 tertiary cancer care centers are being set up, the Health Minister added. The Union government’s vision is delivery of quality tertiary care services to our citizens, he stated.
Expressing happiness over initiatives taken by PGIMER, Shri Nadda said that the Institution is working towards realizing Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of digital India. He informed that, PGIMER, Chandigarh is working towards full implementation of e-hospital. Online OPD registration is already working and the institution is in the process to automate its diagnostic services and payment facilities in a time bound manner. With these facilities in place, a lot of time and effort of the patients will be saved. The Health Minister urged administration of the institute to actively participate in recently launched “Kayakalp” scheme to promote Swachhata in hospitals.
Prof Kaptan Singh, Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and Haryana, Smt. Kirron Kher, Member of Parliament from Chandigarh, Sh Bhanu Pratap Sharma, Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) and Dr. Yogesh Chawla, Director, PGIMER, Chandigarh were also present on this occasion.
