Two-day conference on “Road Safety and Safe Mobility : Initiatives in India” inaugurated

A two-day conference on “Road Safety and Safe Mobility : Initiatives in India” was inaugurated here today by Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Shri Vijay Chhibber. Expressing concern over high fatality rate in road accidents in India, he said that the Government has taken several initiatives to improve the road safety standards in the country. While emphasizing on raising awareness levels about road safety, Shri Chhibber said that the Government aims to promote social messaging on road safety and embed these messages in school curriculum. He enumerated the steps being taken on road safety such as unified vehicle registration system at national level, unified driving license system with automated driving test, penalty point system to track driver and vehicles involved in accidents, zero tolerance for drunken driving, mandatory use of helmets, greater use of technology for compliance, mandatory crash test for vehicles and cashless treatment to road accident victims. He said that the private sector has to play an important role in improving road safety standards. 

Australia has been the partner country for the conference. Australia’s Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Mr. Jamie Briggs who was also present on the occasion, shared highlights of road safety measures in his country. He emphasized on better roads, safe technology and responsible and safe driving. An MoU was also signed on the occasion by Australian Assistant Minister for Infrastructure, Mr Jamie Briggs and International Road Federation (IRF)-India Chapter Chairman, Dr K K Kapila. Under the MoU, the 16 KM stretch, from India Gate to Badarpur border in Delhi, will be developed as a demo stretch for safe road mobility by the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) under its ongoing ‘Integrated Road Safety Initiative’ in India. The stretch will soon have latest traffic and junction management gadgets,traffic control systems and lane violation check cameras.
