The Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Culture & Tourism Shri Shripad Yesso Naik has said that Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) looks after 3680 monuments/sites including 413 in Tamil Nadu that are declared as of national importance under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha today Shri Naik said, the conservation, preservation and maintenance of these centrally protected monuments is a continuous process which is taken up by ASI, on need basis as per archaeological norms, subject to the availability of resources. The development of tourist centres is not the mandate of ASI. The development and promotion of various tourism destinations & products is primarily the responsibility of the respective State Government/Union Territory Administration.
The Minister said, the Ministry of Tourism, however, provides Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to various State Governments & Union Territory Administration for tourism projects prioritized in consultation with them for each financial year, subject to availability of funds, inter-se-priority and adherence to scheme guidelines. The details of tourism projects for which CFA was sanctioned/released during the last three years and the current year upto 30.06.2014 to the State Government of Tamil Nadu are given in Annexure-I. The State-wise details of expenditure incurred by ASI for conservation, preservation of centrally protected monuments/sites in the country during the last three years and allocation for the current year is at Annexure-II.
