Press Club, Mumbai’s Red Ink Awards for Excellence in Journalism presented.

Maharashtra Governor Shri K Sankaranarayanan and Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Prakash Javadekar, presented the fourth edition of Red Ink Awards for excellence in journalism in Mumbai this Saturday evening. The Awards , instituted by the Press Club, Mumbai aim to recognize and promote quality writing, fair play and ethics in the field of journalism.
Speaking on the occasion, MIB Prakash Javadekar undelined the new government's commitment to freedom of press stating that it is the essence of democracy. He said, India has earned the press freedom through great struggle and it must be preserved. The minister however added that with freedom comes responsibility, and fairness and impartiality should be the cardinal principles. Mr Javadekar said media should be guided by self restraint and not censorship.
Referring to various issues and challenges before his Ministry, Mr Prakash Javadekar said the government would take decisions through consultations with all the stakeholders. "We do not want to impose our views unilaterally." he added.
Post mortem of Election 2014:
RedInk Awards Ceremony was also a time for post-mortem of the Election coverage. A panel discussion on “Elections 2014 : Were We Fair, or Did We Stoke the Modi Wave” was held with a spirited participation of Times Now Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, CNN-IBN Editor-in-Chief , Rajdeep Sardesai, veteran journalist Kumar Ketkar,Piyush Pandey of Ogilvy. The debate was moderated by Uday Shankar, CEO, STAR India.
Lifetime Achievement Award for Mrinal Pande :
Veteran journalist, author and TV personality Ms Mrinal Pande was honoured with the ‘Life Time Achievement Award for her contribution in the fields of print journalism, literature and television. Ms. Pande, took over as the first woman editor of Hindi daily ‘Hindustan’ in early 2000s and turned it around from being a laggard to among the largest circulated dailies in the country. She was the founding President of Indian Womens’ Press Corps and also the chairperson of national broadcaster Prasar Bharati .
Red Ink Awards :
In all, Red Ink Awards for excellence were given away in 10 categories - political news and features, business news and features, crime news and features, sports news and features, lifestyle & entertainment, human rights and environment, science and innovation, health and wellness, Big Picture of the Year and the Television Story of the Year. Each award carried a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.
Press Club Mumbai, received an overwhelming response with over 800 entries from 75 print and internet publications. A significant number of web based journalists also pitched their news stories, indicating that the online journalism and web-based platforms are becoming increasingly active and popular vehicles of mass communication.
The winners in different categories were chosen by an independent jury which was a mix of industry experts, knowledge leaders and senior journalists. The panels included such eminent names as Shyam Benegal for the ‘Entertainment and Lifestyle’ section, Rahul Dravid for the sports category, Dr Swati Piramal judging ‘Health and Wellness’ entries, Dr KC Chakrabarty, RBI Dy. Governor , for ‘Business’ section, noted lawyer Satish Maneshinde for ‘Crime’, and celebrity lensman Pablo Bartholomew sitting on the photography jury.
