As such, there is no dedicated trans-shipment terminal except International Container Trans-shipment Terminal (ICTT), Vallarpadam at Cochin Port with a capacity of 1 MTEUs during last 3 years. The proportion of container transshipped during the last three years is:
2013-14 -1.86 MTEUs (24.9% out of total container 7.46 MTEUs handled)
2014-15 - 2.49 MTEUs (31.2% out of total container 7.96 MTEUs handled)
2015-16-2.84 MTEUs (34.7% out of total container 8.20 MTEUs handled)
The traffic handled at ICTT, Vallarpadam was 3.47, 3.66 and 4.19 lakh TEUs during the last three years.The problem being faced in augmentation of trans-shipment capacity is consolidation of cargo and proximity to the main sea route line.
Major competitors of Indian Ports for transhipment business are Colombo, Dubai, Singapore, Jabel Ali, Port Kelang, etc. For development and setting up of trans-shipment port and to improve its share in trans-shipment trade, the Government of India is contemplating development of Enayam Port in Tamil Nadu and at Vizhinjam in the state of Kerala.
