Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY)

The Government under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) has decided to upgrade 71 existing Government Medical Colleges/Institutes (GMCIs) in the country under the Scheme at various phases i.e. Phase-1: up-gradation of 13 existing GMCIs, Phase-II: up-gradation of 6 existing GMCIs, Phase-III: up-gradation of 39 existing GMCIs & Phase IV: up-gradation of 13 existing GMCIs.  Details along with current status of the upgradation projects in various States including Kerala are given below:

PHASE I of PMSSY
 Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved upgradation of 13 existing Govt. Medical Colleges under PMSSY Phase-I at the cost of 120 Crore each (Central Share : Rs.100 Cr. & State Share : Rs.20 Cr.) on 22.06.2006.

The Government has decided to upgrade the existing Medical College of Alappuzha under Phase III of PMSSY with a total cost of Rs.150 crore (Central Share=Rs.120 crore and State Share=Rs.30 crore). The up-gradation of Government T.D. Medical College, Alappuzha involves construction of Super Speciality Block as Centre of Excellence having departments like Neurology, Neurosurgery, Cardiology, Cardio Thorasic Surgery, Nephrology, Urology, Medical Gastroenterology, Plastic surgery and Endocrinology; 8 operation theaters; 5 ICUs and also procurement and installation of medical equipment and services.
Timeline for completion of the upgradation work depends upon various factors like approval of authorities concerned, approval of DPR and issue of notification of award. The timeline for completion of works is mentioned in the notification of award and is generally for a period of 16 to 24 months from date of award of work depending upon the size of the project and local site specific conditions.
The Minister of State (Health and Family Welfare), Sh Faggan Singh Kulaste stated this in a written reply in the Lok Sabha here today.
