The Census (2011) data showed a significant declining trend in the Child Sex Ratio (CSR) between 0-6 years with an all time low of 918. CSR is measured by the census in a decade. (Click here for the State/UT wise details of the CSR as per Census 2011)
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Campaign (BBBP) was launched by Prime Minister on 22nd January, 2015 at Panipat, Haryana. BBBP addresses the declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and related issues of women empowerment over a life-cycle continuum. It is a tri-ministerial effort of Ministries of Women and Child Development, Health & Family Welfare and Human Resource Development. The key elements of the scheme include nation-wide awareness and advocacy campaign and multi-sectoral action in selected 161 districts at present (Click here for list of 161 districts). The multisectoral action includes strict enforcement of Pre-Conception & Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC&PNDT) Act, Pre-Natal/Post Natal care of mother, enrolment in schools, construction of girl toilets, community engagement and training etc.
Since the overall objective of the Scheme is to improve declining Child Sex Ratio in the country and create an enabling environment for the education of girl child, this requires long-term attitudinal change. The Scheme is at a nascent stage of implementation and it is too early to assess its impact at this stage. However, scheme has been received well and and in the last one and half year, several local innovative interventions have been demonstrated by the districts with support from Departments of WCD, Health & Education. In the first phase 100 districts were taken up and in the Second phase, 61 more districts are covered under the scheme.
