Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation reaches out to Maharashtra

Maharashtra CM says- 13 districts, 100 blocks, 10000 GPs to be made ODF in 2016-17
Continuing a series of meetings with State governments, the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation today made an outreach to the State of Maharashtra. The Secretary, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Shri Parameswaran Iyer, met the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai today. The meeting involved a review by the Chief Minister, of the sanitation situation in the State. Shri Fadnavis committed to making 13 districts – which includes 100 blocks and 10000 GPs – of Maharashtra Open Defecation Free (ODF) in the State in 2016-17.

The Chief Minister reviewed the implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission in all districts of Maharashtra. The Secretary, Shri Iyer, said at the review meeting that meeting the goals of Swachh Bharat Mission relied heavily on the ‘PM-CM-DM’ formula, i.e. involving the Prime Minister’s vision and goal setting for Swachh Bharat, the Chief Minister’s supporting role at the State level, and the District Magistrate / District Collector /CEO, Zila Parishad in a leadership role at the local level.

Shri Fadnavis expressed his agreement with the model and expressed his State’s commitment to making the vision of a Swachh Bharat a reality. He told the District CEOs to work on this in mission mode and not in the form of business as usual. It was stressed at the meeting that Swachh Bharat is not just about toilet construction, but about behavior change in terms of sanitation habits of communities. Prior to the meeting with the Chief Minister, the Secretary also reviewed the drinking water situation in the State with the Principal Secretary of Maharashtra and his team, and assured them of necessary support from the Central government.
