British Minister of Immigration meets MoS (Home) Shri Kiren Rijiju
The Minister of State for Home Affairs Shri Kiren Rijiju has said India will explore the possibility of signing an agreement with the United Kingdom on exchanging information about criminals. Interacting with the visiting UK Minister of State for Immigration Mr. James Brokenshire here today(15-02-2016), Shri Rijiju assured that New Delhi will positively consider the draft and advance signing of the MoU on Information Exchange on Criminality and Criminals.
Shri Rijiju raised the issue of as many as 131 pending requests from New Delhi on extradition of wanted persons under the Extradition Treaty. The UK Minister clarified these matters were for the British courts to decide. Besides the provision of death penalty in India and the European Commission’s provisions on Human Rights proved to be hurdles in acceding to the requests, he added. Mr. Brokenshire however assured cooperation and said a team of experts may examine the pending issues on case-to-case basis.
The British Minister voiced concern on Indian migrants overstaying their visa tenure in the UK and pointed out that Indians constituted the largest such group. Shri Rijiju said India will cooperate but needs to verify the Indian citizens amongst such illegal immigrants. He also flagged India’s concerns on the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) set up by the UK that might impede those Indians travelling to the UK for travel and work. Mr. Brokenshire said the British Government has not reached a conclusion yet on its recommendations and said the UK in fact encourages Indian students to visit Britain for higher education. Also, 20,000 jobs are being offered to students and this will largely benefit the Indian students.
The visiting British delegation pointed out limitations on making payment for online e-Tourist Visa to visit India. Shri Rijiju assured that the payment gateway is being upgraded to facilitate the same.
