As part of Op Lehar, the Navy as the lead agency is actively coordinating with all agencies to restore the city of Visakhapatnam to normalcy. A multi-pronged approach through provision of relief material, clearing of debris from vital areas, food distribution and skilled assistance for restoration of vital services at airport, telephone exchange, and sea port are paying rich dividends.
After making the Vizag airfield operational for round the clock day and night operation on 16 Oct, the Navy along with NDRF personnel shifted focus to assisting the AAI in getting the Vizag Airport terminal ready for civil flight operations. The complete terminal and the Entry / exits have been cleared of debris and the baggage conveyor belts cleared of water. The X-ray screening machines have also been made operational. The Foreign Object Damage (FOD) clearance of the airfield has also been completed to facilitate resumption of flight operations from today.
On request from the Visakhapatnam Port Trust, the complete hydrographic survey of the port is being undertaken by Indian Naval Survey ships.
Community kitchens are continuing at Seetammadara and Bhimilli. A helicopter sortie for air drop of 250 Kgs of food / relief material was carried out today at Rambilli which continues to be isolated.
Three IAF aircraft are scheduled to arrive today at Visakhapatnam carrying about 17 tons of relief material. A total of 184 tonnes of relief material has been ferried by the Indian Air Force today.
The transhipment of Relief Material to Zonal centres, in consultation with the Joint Collector, is continuing at the Distribution Centre set up at Dega.
The Indian Army is examining the feasibility to restore a broken bridge on the Paderu – G Madugula Road.
