No slums in Manipur, Dadra, Nagar & Haveli, Daman & Diu and Lakshdweep
Slum population in the country has increased by over 130 lakhs between 2001 and 2011. Number of towns that reported slum dwellers increased from 1,743 to 2,613 during the same period. This was informed by Urban Development Minister Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu in a written reply to Shri P. Nagarajan, Shri Dushyant Chautala and Shri Ch. Malla Reddy in Lok Sabha today.
Maharashtra tops the list with a slum population of over 118 lakhs followed by the erstwhile undivided Andhra Pradesh (101 lakhs), West Bengal (64 lakhs), UP (62 lakhs), Tamil Nadu (58 lakhs), MP (57 lakhs), Karnataka (33 lakhs), Rajasthan(21 lakhs), Chattisgarh (19 lakhs), Delhi(18 lakhs), Gujarat (17 lakhs), Haryana (16 lakhs), Odisha (15.60 lakhs), Punjab(14.60 lakhs) and J&K(6.60 lakhs).
Gujarat reported the highest decline in slum population (2,95,758) between 2001 and 2011 followed by Delhi(2.40 lakhs), Maharashtra (1,27,520), Punjab (23,056), Haryana (18,812) and Chandigarh(11,990).
Among the states that reported increase in slum population, Andhra Pradesh topped the list with a hike of over 39 lakhs followed by MP(19 lakhs), West Bengal(17.54 lakhs), Tamil Nadu(15.57 lakhs), Chattisgarh (8 lakhs), UP(4.83 lakhs), Bihar(4.20 lakhs), Odisha (4.71 lakhs), J&K (2.88 lakhs), Uttarakhand (1.37 lakhs) and Kerala(1.27 lakhs).
No slum population has been reported in Manipur, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu and Lakshdweep in 2011.
Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim who had reported no slums in 2001 census reported marginal slum dwellers in 2011.
