Indian and New Zealand Ministers for Sports Meet

     Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Jitendra Singh met the New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister for Sports and Recreation and Minister for the Rugby World Cup, Mr. Murray McCully in New Delhi yesterday(4 June, 2013). The Sports Ministers of the two countries met to exchange views on issues related to development of sports. Mrs. Jan Henderson, New Zealand High Commissioner to India, Mr. Stephen Harris, Director South/South East Asia, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Shri P.K. Deb, Secretary (Sports), Government of India were also present during the meeting. 

Shri Jitendra Singh spoke about the programmes being run by the Government of India to encourage sports in the country at the Panchayat, Block and the District level. He stresed on the importance of identification and nurturing of sports talent in the country and elaborated upon the role of Sports Authority of India in setting up Centres of Excelence (COX) for training of elite sportspersons to represent India in international sporting competitions. Shri Jitendra Singh also focused on the need to increase the quality of coaches in the country and focus on the emerging disciplines of sports science, sports medicine and sports administration. 

The New Zealand Minister, Mr. Murray McCully briefed about the the national training institute being set up in New Zealand. The Minister also spoke about some of the popular sports in the New Zealand, viz. rugby, football and cricket. Mr. Murray McCully further spoke about the sports scholarships offered by the New Zealand and expressed his hope that the number of scholarships would be initiated by the Government of India. 

Shri Jitendra Singh expressed hope that the MoU recently signed by the two countries would soon be operationalized and lead to greater cooperation between the two countries. Mr. McCully welcomed the thought and both the Ministers agreed to increase cooperation and exchange of information between the two countries in the field of sports development and excellence.
