The team members of the 1st North East India top of World Mt. Everest Expedition met the Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Jitendra Singh in New Delhi yesterday (June 3, 2013). These members who successfully summited the Mt. Everest were led by Dr. L. Surjit Singh from Manipur and they belong to the six States of North East India. The expedition members handed over the Mt. Everest Summit Flag to the Minister after the successful completion of the mission.
The Minister while addressing the group of World Mt. Everest Expedition expressed the possibility that such an expedition could be made into an annual feature.
The expedition had several first to its credits. The prominent members who successfully summited the Mt. Everest are: Mr. Nameirakpam Chingkheinganba from Manipur – youngest mountaineer from India to summit Mt. Everest; Ms. Anshu Jamserpa from Arunachal Pradesh – first lady from the State and mother of two children to successfully climb the Everest; Ms. N. Bidyapati Devi from Manipur and Ms. Wansuk Myrthong from Meghalaya – first ladies from the respective states to achieve the goal and last but not the least Mr. Tarun Saikia from Assam – the first person from the State to summit Mt. Everest. Mr. Mr. Anand Gurung from Sikkim is the first person from the expedition team to summit Mt. Everest.
The expedition was first flagged off on 28th February 2013 from Kangla Uttara by the Governor of Manipur Shri Gurbachan Jagat and on 28th March, 2013 it was finally flagged off by the President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee.
