Trademark Certificates

The Office of the Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks has 11 Offices in five cities. Of these, 4 are Patent Offices located at Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi while the Trade Marks Registry (TMR) has offices at Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Ahmedabad. The Design Office is at Kolkata and the Geographical Indications Registry is at Chennai.

The statement relating to branch wise details of trademark certificates issued as on 30th April, 2013 is at Annexure. Pendency in issuance of registration certificates for applications found fit for registration as on 30th April, 2013 is 30,221.

The main cause of the backlog in issuance of registration certificates is insufficient manpower due to vacant posts. At present, 56 of the sanctioned 130 posts (Group A, Group B [gazetted]) relating to Trade Mark Registry are lying vacant.

The functions of the Trade Marks Registry (including registration of Trademarks) are required to be performed as per provisions of the Trade Marks Act, 1999 and the Trade Marks Rules, 2002. The Office of CGPDTM brings out office orders from time to time with the view to streamline the functioning of the offices.
