The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has welcomed the unanimous election of Smt. Sumitra Mahajan as Speaker of the sixteenth Lok Sabha, in accordance with the highest traditions of the House.
Congratulating Smt. Sumitra Mahajan soon after she took over as Speaker, the Prime Minister also welcomed the assumption of this high office in the world's largest democracy, by a woman, and said that Smt. Sumitra Mahajan’s guidance would be of immense benefit as the House endeavoured to serve India’s people.
He said that Smt Mahajan had vast experience in public life, from being a corporator in the Indore Municipal Corporation, to an eight-term MP of the Lok Sabha.
The Prime Minister said that the sixteenth Lok Sabha was comparable to the first, with approximately 315 first-time MPs. He said the House has an opportunity to leave behind many old traditions, and establish new ones. He said Indian Parliament is a temple of democracy, and has the opportunity to present India to the world as a powerful democracy, with new energy.
He said the Speaker’s name itself suggests that everyone will feel she is a friend. Our ancient texts also say – “Mahajaney yen gatah panthaya” – it is beneficial to walk the path on which Mahajans walk.
He assured the Speaker on behalf of the entire House, that she would receive full cooperation of all members in conducting the proceedings of the House successfully.
